"Theories on Life: The Theory of One"
First of all, this isn’t about physics. And it isn’t about being perfect. It’s just about how everything in life works, and how looking at things a certain way can help you navigate your way through the crap and attain some level of success, in work, and in life. I don’t claim to have it mastered, but I am aware of it, and you should be too.
What’s the difference between someone who achieves and someone who doesn’t? Is it talent? Yes. Is it intelligence? Yes, it’s that also. Is it luck? Absolutely. But the real question is, what can you do? What is under your control? And for that there is only one answer. Do your best to do everything right. Easy enough said. Do things the right way at the right time. There is only one way to do things, and that’s the right way, and only one time to do things, and that is at the right time. The same applies to integrity, the truth. There is only one truth about everything. It’s not about being honest, it’s about knowing what’s true, and what’s not. Not pretending.
The right way. Generally speaking, people who achieve some level of contentment in life have figured out how to do whatever they do in life, the right way. If I’m a janitor, I’ve figured out that cleaning things properly every time on a specific schedule in a certain way means my job gets completed properly. My employer is happy. My job is secure. I feel good about myself. I’m not perfect, but generally everything is going to work out because my intent is always the same, to complete the task correctly. If I hide in the back, or slow down when nobody is watching, skip things here and there, I win in the short term because I’m not working very hard and I’m getting the same money, but in the long term, all my security is jeopardized. This applies to sales. To school. To life. It’s not about intent. It’s about how you make decisions when nobody's looking. It’s about knowing and understanding and trying to do everything you do, the right way as you understand it as often as humanly possible. Every little thing. The more you can do right, generally the easier life gets, the more security you have and the more content you become. One way. The right way.
The same applies to time. There is only one time to do anything, and that’s the right time. If it’s something you can do now, and get it off your plate, then most often the right time is now. If the right time is later, then it needs to be planned. The right time to plan it is now. The human memory is a magnificent thing, but add life, stress, maybe some alcohol and drugs and guess what, not so perfect. The right time to do something, plan something, or delegate something is always now. It’s not a perfect science. We have a life. We have to sleep. It’s an awareness and a work habit that acknowledges if you can get into the habit of doing, delegating or scheduling everything at the earliest possible moment, then you can manage an almost infinite amount of stuff, and keep it all under control. If you put things off, let things pile up, don’t schedule things, then pretty soon life is out of control, and everything is overwhelming. A mess. Your job. Your home. Your life. Your contentment. All a mess because of one thing. Not understanding that the right time to do anything, is when it should be done. Right now.
The one truth. That’s a tough one. I’m not talking about religion; definitely don’t want to go there. I’m talking about accepting and living in reality. Knowing what the truth is about everything. One way to live, in the open. It’s not about always telling the truth, although life is much easier if you don’t have a bunch of shit you’re hiding. It’s not really a moral thing. It’s about knowing that there is only one truth, about almost everything, and that should guide you. If you rob a bank, and you lie and say you didn’t do it, and get away with it, great. You have a bunch of extra cash, and you’re free. But you still robbed a bank. You’re still a thief. As long as you know and accept that it’s cool. But if you get caught, or get shot, then too bad, because the truth is you’re a bank robber. Accept it. That’s the key. Contentment comes from understanding what is true and what is not. What is right and what is not. Then basing your thoughts and actions on what you know to be true and not fooling yourself. It’s ok to lie, but know that you own that forever, and the bigger the lie, the more baggage you create for yourself. But avoid at all costs lying to yourself, because that’s really what screws you up. The reality is there is only one truth to anything and accepting that makes life a whole lot clearer.
And there it is. How it all comes together. The theory of one. One way to do things. The right way to the best of your ability. One time to do things. Now. Do it, schedule it, or delegate it…now. One reality. One truth. What you understand and believe to be true. A baseline in which to run a life, an education, a home, a business, you name it, it works that way. Mix in a little self-forgiveness for the mistakes and missteps and you may have a recipe for survival in a pretty tough world. Good luck.
